The headlines were just published today in the Diario de Yucatan stating to keep the traditions alive… This refers to Hanal Pixan… food for the souls( departed ones) a very maya tradition and celebrates the day of the dead… for you north of the border you know it Halloween.
There is a real push to keep this tradition as north of the border customs are creeping in and will , if not kept alive, kill the traditions of, not just here in the Yucatan but other countries too.
Last night was the annual demonstration of the typical alters and houses of the ancient maya. All the schools participate in their own school then they are judged to see who will win a place in the main square.Again they are judged to win the best designed Altar of the town.
I had nearly a full house last night and I was so excited to let the people know what was happening in the village. Most of my guests went wandering into town to see this spectacular that they would rarely have a glimpse of if staying in the bigger hotels. They were in awe and thankful for the experience .Yes, this is the real life in the countryside of the Yucatan. Maybe you would like to come and be a part of it.
