The annual fair of St Elena

The celebrations for the annual fair of St Elena started yesterday and will continue for two weeks. Last night was another night of fireworks and burning of the bull this will be the first of many over the next two weeks.

There is not much in the way of fair rides just a few carousels for the smaller children and football machines for the older ones. This time the bajada (taking down from the church a saint) was the statue of Jesus on the cross being transported in a walking procession to the elected house where he stays for two nights. After this he is returned to the church in the morning and taken out again that same night Friday to spend a day in the chapel of San Juan . My friend Candelario is the keeper of the small chapel and the chapel is the love of his life. There Jesus will stay one night and the following night he will spend in the house of Candelario. Of course there will be more fireworks more bulls burnt in the centre of town and two will be lit in front of San Juan chapel . Thursday night before the procession, that takes place the following day, neighbours, friends and relatives are invited to drink coffee in his house. The day of the return of statue of Jesus will be another celebration dinner of Relleno negro. Again all people are invited to enter his house and partake of the food. The statue of Jesus will be staying in quite a few houses during this period. For the people that want to host the statue of Jesus next year there will be the K,oche celebrated outside of the chosen house. See my previous story about the Koche. The celebrations will end with the traditional dance of the cochinita (pig) I will write more on this as the event takes place.
